Oleg V. Belyakov, Ph.D., Ass. Prof. graduated from the Department of Biology, St. Petersburg State University in 1995. Then he has obtained a MSc in Radiobiology in 1997 at St. Bartholomew's and the Royal London Hospital School of Medicine and Dentistry, QMW, University of London, UK. During 1998-2002 Oleg was working on his PhD. It was a collaborative project between the Gray Cancer Institute, Northwood, UK (nowadays the Gray Institute for Radiation Oncology and Biology at the University of Oxford) and the Radiation and Environmental Science Centre, Dublin Institute of Technology, Ireland. During 2002-2003 Oleg was working as a Post-Doctoral Research Scientist at the Radiological Research Accelerator Facility, Center for Radiological Research, College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University, New York city, USA. In 2003 Oleg joined the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK), Helsinki, Finland as a Senior Scientist and a Marie Curie fellow (2003-2005). In 2005-2008 he was coordinating work for the Non-Targeted Ionizing Radiation Effects (NTIRE) Research Group within the Radiation Biology Laboratory at STUK. In 2006 Oleg became and Associated Professor (Docent) in Radiation Biology at the Faculty of Natural and Environmental Sciences, University of Kuopio (starting from 2010 University of Eastern Finland), Finland. Oleg has been involved in a number of European project including the Non-targeted effects of ionising radiation (NOTE) EC Integrated Project, 2006-2010, where he was serving as a Deputy coordinator, Management board member and secretary, Leader of Work Package 7 (Dissemination and exploitation activities). Oleg has joined the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the Division of  Space Life Sciences (DSLS), Universities Space Research Association (USPRA), Houston, USA in November 2009 as a Senior Scientist in the group of Dr. Francis A. Cucinotta (NASA Space Radiation Program).

Oleg’s academic interests include: cell biology and histology, radiation biology, radiation cytogenetics, radiation biodosimetry, health effects of radiation exposure non-targeted effects of ionizing radiation, 3D tissue experimental systems, microbeam related research, construction of isotope based irradiator systems, radiation epidemiology and theoretical biology.
