Dazhuang Zhou received his Ph.D. in Physics from University College Dublin, National University of Ireland. His research work was focused on the properties of cosmic rays at aviation altitudes and in space. He worked at the University of Science and Technology of China (1970–1996), the Enrico Fermi Institute at the University of Chicago (1983–1985), the Italian National Agency of Environmental Protection (1992–1994) and the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (1996–2004). He joined USRA and the Space Radiation Analysis Group at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in October 2004.
The focus of Dr. Zhou’s present work is space radiation research using active and passive detectors and methods available now. His research work includes measurement methods, detector development and calibration, data acquisition and data analysis for the linear energy transfer (LET) spectra (fluence, absorbed dose and dose equivalent) of space radiation and the charge spectra of galactic cosmic rays as well as the estimation method for the radiation risk resulting from the exposure of space radiation based on the LET spectra measured for the radiation experienced by astronauts.
