The Green and the Gray: Competing Technologies
in Space Exploration and Development

Charles Sheffield was born in England, educated at St. John's College, Cambridge,
and holds a Ph.D. in theoretical physics. He is a Past-President and Fellow
of the American Astronautical Society, a Fellow of the American Association
for the Advancement of Science, a Fellow of the British Interplanetary Society,
a Distinguished Lecturer for the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics,
a Past-President of the Science Fiction Writers of America, and a Member
of the International Astronomical Union.
His forty published books include best-sellers of both fact and fiction.
He has authored more than a hundred technical papers on subjects ranging
from astronomy to large-scale computer systems, and serves as a reviewer
of science texts for the New Scientist, The World & I, and the Washington
Post.
His writing awards include the Isaac Asimov Memorial Award for popularization
of science, the Hugo Award, the Nebula Award, the Japanese Sei-un Award,
and the John W. Campbell Memorial Award.
His 1999 book, BORDERLANDS OF SCIENCE, explores the boundaries
of current science. His ongoing syndicated weekly column, BORDERLANDS
OF SCIENCE, does the same thing for a general adult audience.
