Zarana S. Patel earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering from the Johns Hopkins University in 2002. She spent two summers at Loma Linda University evaluating the effects of radiation exposure on thyroid organoids, and she completed her doctoral degree at Rice University in 2007 in Bioengineering, developing controlled delivery systems for angiogenic and osteogenic growth factors for bone regeneration. Zarana joined USRA in September 2007 and is working in the Space Radiation Health Program at NASA Johnson Space Center with Dr. Francis Cucinotta and Dr. Janice Huff. Her current research focuses on development of 3-D cell culture models for the evaluation of radiation effects on human tissue analogues.
