Artem L. Ponomarev, Ph.D. began his scientific work at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology where he was a student in Vitaly Ginzburg's (Nobel Prize in Physics 2003) Theoretical Physics group. He came to United States in 1993 on a full fellowship with stipend to complete his graduate studies at Columbia University in New York, where he received his Ph.D. in 1998. He has worked at Los Alamos National Laboratory, the UC Berkeley department of mathematics, held an Assistant Professor position at Baylor College of Medicine, and a junior position working in radiobiology with Dr. Francis Cucinotta at the NASA Johnson Space Center. In 2004, Artem joined the DSLS as a Research Scientist. He is proud to be a United States citizen.

His current position brings him back to Dr. Cucinotta’s group at JSC working on Radiation Protection for astronauts. His focus is developing biophysical models of DNA damage from space radiation and consulting with astronaut-physicist Franklin Chang-Diaz's Plasma Rocket group on radiation issues.
