DSLS STUDENT RESEARCH PROGRAM
PROGRAM INFORMATION
As part of USRA’s Division of Space Life Sciences’ (DSLS) Education Program, the Student Research Program (SRP) was created to support the laboratory and research goals of NASA’s Johnson Space Center and seeks to cultivate research ties to the local academic community in the area of Life Sciences. The program offers local students the opportunity for flexible part - time employment at NASA Johnson Space Center with scientists who can mentor them and provide a unique research element to their college education. While each position will have individual requirements, a typical work week for students during the school semester would be 20 hours per week between the hours of 7:30 am and 5:30 pm on Monday through Friday.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Applicants will be considered for posted student positions without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, marital status, disability, or any other legally protected status pursuant to the Texas Employment Discrimination Law, and other relevant federal, state and local laws.
- Be a United States citizenBe enrolled in an accredited undergraduate or graduate degree program in a local university.
- Be in overall good academic standing at their enrolled college or university. A Letter of Support from one advisor or faculty member is also required.
SELECTION CRITERIA
The applicant’s scholastic achievements, scientific interests, coursework and work experience will be used as criteria in the selection. Each position will have defined educational or skills requirements that the successful candidate must meet. Candidates not meeting the basic eligibility, educational, or skills requirements for the position in which they are applying will be notified of their ineligibility via e-mail.
Those candidates that meet the minimum posted requirements will progress to a secondary review and the most qualified candidates will be contacted for an interview with the DSLS Director. All applicants for a particular position will be notified by e-mail when the position has been filled.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
Selected candidates in the Student Research Program will be non-exempt employees of USRA. Hourly wages for these student positions will be paid according to the NASA General Schedule rates between the GS-02 and GS-09 Grades. The Pay Scale below shows the general range of hourly wages to be paid for an SRP student position. The wages for a specific position will be set based upon the selected candidate’s degree, the number of academic hours completed in an accredited degree program, and the candidate’s experience level.

These positions are not eligible for vacation time, sick time, holiday leave, or medical/dental benefits. Transportation to and from NASA’s Johnson Space Center is the sole responsible of the student employee.
