2003 Summer Short Course, "Basic Biology for Engineers"

A new course designed to emphasize the principles of biology for the engineers who design research equipment for the International Space Station will be presented August 11-16, 2003 at the NASA Ames Research Center.

August 18, 2003 Special Technology Seminar

A special seminar on Monday, August 18, 2003, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. will offer a glimpse at new “lab-on-a-chip” technology. Ms. Lisa Monaco, Lab-on-a-Chip Project Scientist at the Marshall Space Flight Center, will present “Lab-on-a-Chip Technology for Macromolecular Crystal Growth and Other Space Science Applications” in the Lecture Hall, Center for Advanced Space Studies, 3600 Bay Area Boulevard at Middlebrook Drive. A Question and Answer Session from 11:00 to 11:45 a.m. will follow the seminar for the discussion of opportunities to use this technology and for the exploration of research collaboration.

August 26, 2003 Aerospace Medicine Grand Rounds

Tuesday, August 26, 2003, 8:00–9:00 a.m. (note new start time)
Russell T. Rayman, M.D.Executive Director of the Aerospace Medical Association, will discuss “Operation Homecoming,” Aerospace Medicine Grand Rounds, 8:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m., Tuesday, August 26, 2003, Lecture Hall, Center for Advanced Space Studies, 3600 Bay Area Blvd. at Middlebrook Drive, Houston, Texas. Dr. Rayman will discuss the repatriation of Vietnam prisoners-of-war, the plans for their medical evaluation, and the medical problems of their long-term captivity.

Credit for Continuing Medical Education will be given for participation in the Aerospace Medicine Ground Rounds.

August 28, 2003 Brown Bag Seminar

Esfandiar Behravesh, Ph.D., Universities Space Research Association, Division of Space Life Sciences, will discuss his work with mutagenesis and radiation biology on Thursday, August 28, 2003 from noon to 1:00 in the Hess Room, Center for Advanced Space Studies, 3600 Bay Area Boulevard, Houston, Texas.
